Junior Year: A To-Do List

Your high school junior is in for a busy year, with lots of activities, events and social plans. No matter how busy life is, though, he or she must stay focused academically. Without directing the college prep process, be there for your junior with support and the occasional friendly reminder or question. Keep the communication going!

Following is a checklist of actions your student needs to take, and when, during junior year. Buy your son or daughter a planner to keep track of everything, and start a family college planning calendar yourself so you can stay involved.

To Do in the FALL

  • Meet with the college counselor to discuss college plans, choose challenging courses and check class rank.
  • Start preparing for the SAT or ACT. If your student wants extra help or tutoring, assist in securing it.
  • Think of topics for the college essay. You might buy him or her a book on the subject for ideas.
  • Continue to research colleges online and send away for print materials. Rate colleges according to key criteria.

To Do in WINTER

  • Record the dates for the spring SAT or ACT. Take advantage of test preparation classes or other academic support opportunities at school.
  • Explore summer jobs, internships and summer program opportunities in the area and, if travel is feasible, around the country. Many colleges and universities sponsor residential programs in the arts and sciences for high school students. Do some research and then follow up on those of interest with the high school guidance office.
  • Narrow down college choices to five to 10, remaining open to other possibilities.

To Do in SPRING

  • Apply for summer jobs or programs.
  • Research loans, scholarships and grants online and in books.
  • Register for and take the SAT or ACT.
  • Visit one or two colleges. Based on reactions, begin to narrow down choices.
  • If necessary, continue to work on testing skills by using practice tests and writing essays.
